Physiotherapy FAQs

What will happen at my first physiotherapy appointment?

Your physiotherapist will assess you by asking questions about your condition and performing a clinical examination. Following the assessment, your physio will discuss the nature of your condition with you and agree a treatment plan that fits in with your lifestyle.

How long will the appointment be?

We recommend that you book an initial appointment of 45 minutes to allow time for a thorough examination, discussion regarding diagnosis, treatment plan and likely prognosis as well as treatment. Follow up treatment sessions will usually be around 30 minutes in duration but can take up to 45 minutes where necessary.

Do I need to fill in lots of forms?

It’s fairly painless but we do need to register you when you arrive – if you can arrive a few minutes early for your first appointment we can get it out of the way before your session begins.

How do I claim on private health insurance?

If you would like us to invoice your private medical insurer directly please bring your details with you. At your first visit you will be provided with a copy of our terms and conditions.

Do I need a doctor’s referral for physiotherapy?

No. However, if you’re planning to claim on private health insurance we recommend you contact your insurer before booking an appointment, as they may require referral by a medical practitioner in order to authorise reimbursement of treatment charges.

What qualifications do your physiotherapists have?

MDG Health physiotherapists are members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and are registered with the Health Professions Council.

What should I bring?

Where relevant you’ll need the following:

  • Details of your referring doctor or your GP’s details
  • Referral letter from your consultant or doctor
  • Any x-rays, scan or test results
  • Details of any medication you are taking
  • Details of your health insurance
  • Running shoes (for running-related injuries)
  • A change of clothes (e.g. shorts and a t-shirt) if your injury is hidden by the clothes you’ll be wearing when you arrive

Will it hurt?

We’ll do our very best to avoid it, but do be aware that occasionally physiotherapy treatment can temporarily exacerbate your symptoms. Your physiotherapist will advise you if this is likely to be the case.

Do you offer acupuncture?

Many of our physiotherapists are trained and licensed to use acupuncture as a form of treatment for pain and injury. Should your physiotherapist wish to use acupuncture, the procedure and effect will be explained to you in detail. If you’d like more information on acupuncture treatment, just speak to your physiotherapist about it.

How much does it cost?
