MDG Health ergonomics services help to reduce absenteeism associated with musculoskeletal disorders; a major cause of employee absence in the UK

Workstation Assessments

Unlike many workstation assessment providers, MDG Health offers specially-trained physiotherapists to carry out assessments for our clients. We deliver a range of assessments, from those aimed purely at complying with HSE DSE legislation, to clinical complex assessments for employees suffering from MSDs or disabilities. All our services are available to home workers.

We provide workstation assessments on an ad hoc basis, aiming to offer an appointment within a week and returning the report within ten working days. We are happy to liaise with HR or occupational health departments on any aspect of the workstation assessment. We can advise on, and obtain, the level of consent required under different circumstances.

Our range of workstation assessment services are as follows.

Workstation risk reviews

  • Approximately 20 minutes on-site
  • Basic Health & Safety checklist assessment

These are our most basic workstation assessments, suitable for when you need a large group of employees assessed at the same time. They are designed predominantly to meet health and safety regulation requirements relating to assessing the risk associated with an individual’s use of a computer workstation. The completed checklist is returned to the employer, detailing any risk noted and recommendations to address the identified risk.

Where a number of workstation risk reviews have been conducted for one client, we can prepare a summary report of our findings and recommendations. This will include advice on sourcing equipment for clients who do not have specialist preferred suppliers.

Simple workstation assessments

  • 30 - 45 minutes onsite and 45 minutes report preparation
  • Workstation assessment for individuals with simple musculoskeletal problems

One of our most widely-used services, these assessments are appropriate for employees with simple musculoskeletal problems. Often, the employer has their own in-house risk management programme but requires additional support when tackling employees with musculoskeletal complaints.

This assessment includes brief subjective investigation of the musculoskeletal problem, task analysis, assessment of working techniques and postures, assessment of compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and relevant anthropometric measurement. A written report is provided to the employer outlining the findings of the assessment, any changes made, information given and recommendations to address the risk identified.

Consent is obtained from the individual immediately prior to the assessment. These assessments are ideal for home workers and can be combined with a vehicle assessment for occupational drivers.

Complex workstation assessment

  • Up to 1.5 hours on-site and 1.5 hours report preparation
  • Workstation assessment for individuals with: complex musculoskeletal problems; physical disability; who have been off work due to their problem; or with complex workstations

These assessments include in-depth subjective investigation of musculoskeletal problems, task analysis, assessment of working techniques and postures, assessment of compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and anthropometric measurement.

A full written report is provided to the employer outlining the findings of the assessment, any changes made, information given and recommendations to address the risk identified. When recommending equipment we either recommend three suppliers for each piece of specified equipment to ensure impartiality or source from our clients’ preferred suppliers. Consent is obtained from the individual immediately prior to the assessment.

Clinical Ergonomic Workstation Assessments

  • Approximately 2 hours on-site and 2 hours report preparation
  • Clinical assessment of individual followed by workstation assessment

An extension of our standard workstation assessment; this includes a clinical examination of the individual, followed by a workplace assessment. The extended format allows more effective recommendation of specialist equipment and is suitable for individuals suffering from work-related upper limb disorders who require specification of alternative input devices.

These assessments are useful for assisting individuals on return-to-work programmes or who have developed a level of disability due to musculoskeletal disorders. Our comprehensive reports differentiate between the recommendations required under health and safety regulations and those that will assist the individual to overcome their disability. Where requested we also offer advice on the clinical management of an individual; this is particularly popular with companies who do not have an occupational health management service. The appropriate level of consent is required for this assessment, depending on whom the report is sent to, and may need to be obtained before the assessment is arranged.
